Climate and Weather in Vietnam

The Climate of Vietnam

Vietnam enjoys a hot and humid climate, characterized by monsoons. There are two main seasons: the dry season (from November to April) and the wet season (from May to October). However, significant differences exist between the North and the South, the coastline, and the Central Highlands.

The Monsoons

The winter monsoon arrives from the Northeast up to Da Nang, bringing cool and wet winters to all regions north of Nha Trang and mild and dry weather in the South. This dry season runs from October to May, peaking in March and April.

The summer monsoon brings hot and humid weather to almost the entire country, except for regions protected by mountains. This season, marked by morning showers followed by sunny afternoons, lasts from May to October, often with flood risks. Violent typhoons from the ocean hit the North or Center from July to November, making this period less ideal for a stay in Vietnam.

The Seasons in Vietnam, from North to South

Due to its geography, Vietnam exhibits significant climatic disparities based on regions and local conditions.

Northern Vietnam

The North has four distinct seasons, unlike the rest of the country, which experiences only two.

  • Spring (April to June): Warm and humid, with heavy heat in June, which might not be the best time to travel if you dislike oppressive weather.
  • Summer (July to mid-September): Very humid, characterized by storms and heat.
  • Autumn (mid-September to December): Pleasant and arguably the most agreeable season, making it one of the best times to visit Vietnam.
  • Winter (January to March): Rather cool (often below 20°C), with a depressing drizzle, especially in Hanoi. The temperature drops significantly in the mountainous northern regions.

The rainy season spans from May to October, followed by the dry season from November to April.

Central Vietnam

Da Nang marks a climatic boundary, delineating the region with two seasons:

  • Dry season (February to July): Characterized by constant heat and humidity.
  • Wet season (August to January): This region is also most affected by typhoons on its coasts. However, the Western Central Highlands enjoy a different climate due to hills and mountains, making the weather milder. The dry season here lasts from November to April, while the rainy season goes from May to October.

The regions of Mui Ne and Nha Trang benefit from a dry and warm microclimate almost all year round.

Southern Vietnam

This region experiences a tropical climate with two distinct seasons:

  • Dry season (October to May): Heavy rain showers during the summer monsoon can cool down the days, sometimes causing floods. Cyclone risks are higher between August and October.

When to Visit Vietnam

Northern Vietnam

The North is best enjoyed between October and November, with pleasant weather. However, if you wish to photograph the rice harvest in the far Northwest, it will be over by then. For Halong Bay, March and June are ideal months.

Central Vietnam

The best time to visit the Central region is from January to April. Between June and July, the sun can be quite strong, but if you’re staying at the beach resorts of Nha Trang or Mui Ne, you’ll make the most of your stay.

Central Highlands

The Tay Nguyen, or Central Highlands, is perfect for those who enjoy cooler weather or a mild winter.

Southern Vietnam

The South is (very) hot year-round. The best time to visit is from December to mid-February to avoid extreme heat. March and April remain dry but very hot, though coastal and island breezes can be refreshing. The Mekong Delta showcases its tropical jungle and mangrove richness during the wet season, from May to September.

This guide should help you plan your trip to Vietnam, ensuring you choose the best time to experience the diverse and rich offerings of this beautiful country.
